From Jane Austene’s novels to Disney’s Cinderella, to Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker, horse drawn carriages appear in some of the world’s most fairy tale like stories as much as they do in the real world. A pre-combustion engine method of transportation, the horse drawn carriages still features in today’s world, including at many iconic world-famous royal events.

At The London Christmas Company, as part of our Carriage Series, we pay homage to one the most famous of carriages – the Landau, and how it features in present day events such as this week’s world-famous Royal Ascot.

A Rich Legacy of Royal Tradition

Royal Ascot has a long-standing history dating back to 1711, when it was founded by Queen Anne. Ever since, it has been an event steeped in regal elegance and renowned for its association with the British Royal Family.

A Showcase of Horse Racing Excellence

The Royal Ascot races are renowned for their top-tier competition and world-class horses. These races attract both seasoned racegoers and newcomers, all seeking to witness the pinnacle of equine athleticism and bask in the excitement of the sport.

The Carriage Procession: A Spectacle of Grandeur

One of the most anticipated moments of Royal Ascot is the grand carriage procession, where members of the Royal Family arrive in magnificent horse-drawn Landau carriages. This procession is a true spectacle, capturing the attention of the crowd and adding an extra touch of splendour to the event.

The Carriages – The Landau: A Symbol of Tradition and Elegance

The carriages used by the Royal Family during Royal Ascot are carefully selected to reflect the heritage and opulence associated with the event. From the majestic Ascot Landau to the stately Glass Coach, these carriages embody the regal spirit and provide a captivating glimpse into a bygone era.

Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of the summer season and at precisely 2pm the Royal Procession arrives along the track in horse-drawn Ascot Landaus carriage, ahead of an afternoon of world class racing.

In coachbuilding, a landau is a four-wheeled luxury carriage with a roof that can be let down, and the Ascot Landau, one of five kept by the Royal Mews and purchased during the reign of Queen Victoria, is a wonderfully bright, small, lovely carriage, used for Coronations, Royal Weddings, and State Visits. The Ascot Landau recently featured in the Carriage Procession for The Prince and Princess of Wales’s Wedding in 2011.

The Ascot Landau is often drawn by the famous Windsor Greys. Windsor Grey Horses play an important role in the ceremonial life of the Royal Family and the nation and have been drawing the carriages of successive monarchs and members of the Royal Family since Queen Victoria's Reign.
